The profit for local was $5.5 billion in 2003/2004. Gambling leads indulgence tax revenues for the regions. At $5.3 billion, provincial gambling revenue is now shy of the $5.5 billion that the provinces net from the selling of alcohol and tobacco. Total profits were estimated at $9 billion by Statistics Canada for 2003. Looking at the difference between the gross and net figures, a big chunk of revenue, $3.1 billion, is the cost of operating gambling.
